Event description:
This event featured a conversation between Emmanuel Alloa (Aesthetics, University of Fribourg), Malina Buturović (Classics, Yale), and Milette Gaifman (Classics and Art History, Yale). The
roundtable examined what is meant by the expression “the fifth-century Athenian Miracle” and the extent to which one can talk about a “miracle” - was the emergence, in the fifth century, of democracy and philosophy in Athens, so sudden? Are there other elements that the narrative of “miracle” obscures? How do we relate to that past? The conversation was moderated by Pauline LeVen (Humanities, Classics, Yale).
